In Tonga, a South Pacific island country, the entire community participates in traditional dances to celebrate the coronation of emperors and other ceremonies. Tonga's national dance has a complex traditional style and unique music. In Tongan, "Lakaraka" means "walk lightly or carefully". Hundreds of men and women took part in these lively performances. Dancing is accompanied by applause and singing. In such an atmosphere, hundreds of dancers are impressed by their coordinated movements and rich polyphonic music. The creative forces behind the performance are poets, composers, dance coaches and performance directors. Traditionally, Lakara needs to be continuously updated. Since the 1960s, the number of new performances has declined. Because La Caraca is traditionally transmitted orally, few publications exist. The decline may be related to a variety of factors, including entertainment, financial difficulties and inadequacies in school curricula, especially contemporary competition of the same type. And young composers, rarely contact with the ancient culture and other traditional sources of culture.

"Lakaraka" in Tongan means "fast and cautious dance", which originates from a dance called "Milovra". The dance appeared in the 19th century and revived in the 20th century with the strong support of the Royal family. The performance usually lasts about 30 minutes and can bring together hundreds of people, usually in two lines, male on the right and female on the left (from the audience). The men's dance rhythm is bright and powerful, while the women's dance steps are graceful and elegant. Two teams of dancers dance, sing and clap their hands, usually accompanied by a chorus. The dense polyphonic voice, accompanied by hundreds of dancers'waving movements, forms an exciting scene.

The creativity of performance comes from Punak, who is also a poet, composer and choreographer. Traditionally, "Punak" draws inspiration from Tongan people's history, legends, spiritual wealth and social organizations, and seeks diverse themes to constantly update the content of "Lakaraka".
