This innovative education program has two overall goals, one is to promote value-based education by integrating local cultural and natural heritage with the curriculum, the other is to contribute to the preservation of Elche’s heritage through education, training, direct activities, and awareness-raising. In 1968, the project succeeded in combining cultural heritage with formal education in Pusol (the village of Elche, Spain), a rural public school with only one teacher. Under the guidance of teachers and outside collaborators, children explore the rich cultural heritage of Elche and contact with the heirs through games, this plays a direct role in protecting the heritage. Children collect data through surveys, and enumerate collections depicting museums. At the same time, children also impart to each other and teach visitors about the heritage. This helps teach themselves and explore such heritage. The project has trained nearly 500 schoolchildren. The school museum’s collection catalogue contains 61,000 entries which include 770 oral files, preserving the heritage of everyday life and promoting the plans for conservation of local cultural heritage resources. From 1968 to the middle of 1980s, the project was confined to the rural area of Pusol where the school was located. With the dissemination of information on the value and achievements of the project, the scope of operation of the project has expanded accordingly, incorporating the rural areas of Elche (mid-1980) and then to Elche (1990s). The local rural society, the general masses of Elche, and the cultural education experts attach great importance to this project whose pioneering democracy, integrated and shared nature make itself a model for demonstrating the bottom-up protection of cultural measures.
