Every year in Tuesday of Pentecost, there is a jump parade (Iechternacher Sprangprëssioun) in the medieval city centre of Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town. A record of the march had been recorded in 1100, and its emergence was based on a cult of St. Willibrod Saint Willibrord. St. Willibrod, a monk and founder of Echternach Monastery, is admired for his missionary activities, his kindness and his talent for the treatment of certain diseases. Although the pagan elements of the march were opposed by the church, the long-standing ban did not stop the spread of the march elsewhere in the region and was loved by all sectors of society. In the presence of the highest levels of the church in Luxembourg and other countries, the procession departs early in the morning from the courtyard of the ancient monastery. The singer recited a prayer, and then 8,000 jumpers began to march, divided into 45 groups based on a ritual passed down from generation to generation. Finally ended with the Church of the cathedral. Today's march is a religious event deeply rooted in tradition and is expressed through the historical forms of worship of prayer, song and dance. Today, despite the secularization of the march, it has become increasingly popular and has received support from civil and religious authorities. The average number of participants from Luxembourg and neighbouring regions reached 13,000 per year.
