Sutartinės is a kind of polyphonic music form sung by female singers in northeastern Lithuania (the word Sutartinės comes from Sutarti and contains the meaning of "harmony" and "Singing with Harmony"). These songs are simple in melody, have two to five pitches, and contain two completely different parts: part is a meaningful main song, the other part is a chorus, and may contain meaningless words. There are nearly 40 different styles and ways to perform Sutartinės. The main way can be sung in parallel by two singers, or three singers according to strict cannon law, while staggered singing the two parts of the melody, or by two groups of singers, a group of singers singing the main song, her partner singing the chorus, the second group will be repeated. The lyrics are poetic and cover topics such as work, festive rituals, weddings, family, war, history and everyday life. Choreography is not complicated, moves milder, and is often more serious, such as overlapping arms and stomping around the circle or walking star shape. Sutartinės performs on solemn occasions, as well as at festivals, concerts and social gatherings. Performances promote the sharing of cultural values and give people a sense of cultural identity, history and self-esteem. Sutartinės ‘s singers are usually women, while men play flute, horns, long wooden numbers, flutes and plucked harps.
