Scissordance is a dance performed by residents of the villages and communities of quechua in Peru's south-central andes who now live in urban areas. This competitive ritual dance is performed during dry periods in the agricultural calendar. The scissors dance takes its name from the pair of polished iron bars each dancer wields in his right hand, which look like scissors. A dancer with a violinist and a harpist forms a cuadrilla (team) representing a village or community. During the performance, two or more sets of cudras face each other, the dancers must hit the blades in time to the rhythm of music, while performing choreographed tap dancing, acrobatic movements and increasingly large movements. The atipanakuy can last up to 10 hours, with physical quality, musical instrument quality and music accompaniment all key to the outcome. The dancers wore clothes decorated with golden tassels, multicolored sequins and small mirrors, but wearing the dress was forbidden to enter the church because, according to tradition, the dancer's ability was the result of an agreement with the devil. In any case, scissors dancing has become a popular part of Catholic celebrations. The spiritual and physical knowledge implied in the dance is orally taught to the students by the master, and every kuderira dancer and musician is the pride of his village.
