Every April, during the Cherry Blossom Festival in Hitachi, a Pacific coastal city in central Japan, and a major May festival in the local Shenfeng Shrine every seven years, Hitachi Lottery Parade is held. Four local blocks - Beiding, Dongding, Xiding and Bending - all built their own floats and displayed them as a venue for worshipping gods and a theatre for multi-story puppet shows. Three to five masters control the ropes of puppets, and music performers accompany elaborate performances. Hitachi Rainbow Parade is a community event in which local residents act in unison. It accommodates every citizen who wants to participate. However, puppet manipulators are strictly handed down from their fathers to their eldest sons within the family. The process of teaching is secret. The treasure house of ancient techniques and stories is thus preserved. It is presumed that they originated from a tour artist in about the eighteenth century. Each community presents a lottery car for the annual cherry blossom festival, and during the big festival of Shenfeng Shrine, the four communities compete with each other to see who has the best puppet performance skills and who can offer the most hospitality to the local gods.
